Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure that has been used since the 1930’s to treat varicose and spider veins. Spider veins are very small less than 1 mm in diameter, blue or red veins that lie close to the surface. Small varicose veins, also known as reticular veins, are small blood vessels that are between 1-3 mm in diameter. Schlerotherapy involves injecting a solution into the vein. This irritates the lining of the veins, which triggers them to collapse. Once collapsed, the veins will be reabsorbed by the body. This eliminates the appearance of veins on the outside of the skin and reduces the pain caused by veins.
• Heredity: You’re at higher risk if other family members have spider or varicose veins.
• Age: Over time, there’s more wear and tear on the valves in your veins.
• Gender: Women are more likely to develop the condition.
• Pregnancy: Increased circulating blood volume may cause enlarged veins in legs.
• Hormonal changes: Fluctuations may contribute to changes in your veins.
• Extra weight or obesity: Being larger can put additional pressure on the veins.
• Prolonged standing or sitting: Blood flow is reduced during periods of inactivity.
• Venous conditions: Vein structure
and performance may increase your risk.
Is there any reason why I shouldn’t receive Asclera treatment?
You shouldn’t receive Asclera if you:
• Have a known allergy to polidocanol
• Have an acute vein or blood clotting
(thromboembolic) disease
• Are pregnant or nursing
Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal products. Together, you can ensure that Asclera is right for you.
How can I prepare for treatment?
Before the day of your procedure:
• Purchase medium-grade compression stockings (20 to 30 mmHg)2 to wear after the procedure to – Help maintain blood flow
– Reduce discomfort and swelling
– Support healing
– Reduce risk of deep vein thrombosis
On the day of treatment:
• Avoid shaving your legs or applying lotion
• Wear loose comfortable clothing that
allows access to the treatment area
What should I expect during the treatment?
• Each session typically lasts 15 to 45 minutes depending on the severity of areas being treated.
• Antiseptic will be used to clean the treatment area
• A very fine needle will be used to inject Asclera intothe treated veins
• A slight stinging may accompany each injection
Because every patient is different, each treatment and its results will vary. Factors include varicose vein severity, disease progression, skin tone, and extent of recommended treatments.
What do I need to do after treatment?
Please wear your compression stockings day and night for 2 to 3 days if treated for spider veins, 5 to 7 days if treated for reticular veins.
Continue to wear them as needed for the following 2 to 3 weeks. Post treatment compression is necessary to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis.
You should also walk 15-20 minutes immediately after treatment and daily for a few days.
What should I NOT do after treatment?
For 2 to 3 days following the treatment, avoid:
• Heavy exercise
• Sunbathing
• Long plane flights
• Hot baths, hot tubs, or saunas
A typical session lasts 15-45 minutes depending on the size of area being treated. Repeat treatment sessions may be necessary. Additional treatment sessions are separated by 2 weeks.
Sclerotherapy is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of spider veins and smaller varicose veins. At first the the area may look worse but within 6 weeks you will notice improvements. Veins typically begin to fade three weeks after treatment, with full effect visible about six weeks post treatment. In addition to the cosmetic benefit, sclerotherapy also may improve aching, swelling, burning and cramping sometimes associated with varicose and spider veins.
Consultation is recommended prior to scheduling treatment to evaluate area and ensure appropriate candidate for sclerotherapy.
Sclerotherapy pricing varies depending of number of vials of sclerosant required and the size of the vessels. Pricing can be further discussed during consultation.
